SWDRFU is proud to have been one of the first fully transformed rugby unions in South Africa. As a leader in transformation the union have excellent structures in place to develop players on all levels and all age groups, particularly those from previously disadvantaged areas.

 

Negotiations are currently underway for the development of a High Performance Centre funded by SARU and the National Lottery. This academy will aim to develop young players to progress through the provincial age groups to ultimately one day play for the Eagles professional team.

 

Currently development is mostly structured around 4 main areas:

 

1. Community Coaching Hubs

This is a programme that was initiatedto keep players in the game that has previously left as a result of lack of man-power at previously disadvantaged schools. Hubs are centred around George, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay and is divided into zones to provide coaching to players from u/7 to u/19 level.

2. Talent Scouting

During September each year the annual talent trials take place where 44 players in each of the U/12, U/15 and U/17 age groups are chosen to form part of a selected squad in the lead up to the provincial trials.

3. Coaches’ training & Education

The development of coaches is vital for the development of the game. IRB Coaching Levels 1 and 2 as well as IRB Sevens Coaching Level 1 and 2 courses are presented. The Coaching Forum helps here to roll out these programs.

4. Club Aid

As a result of the assistance from SARU, SWDRFU is able to supply most of its more than 100 clubs with important training gear such as Jerseys, Balls, Cones, Bump-Shields and Pole-protectors.
